Car Rental in New Zealand
The renter must provide a driving licence, credit card, and a passport. You can rent a car for around $30 a day. The renter must have a passport, international driving license and a credit card in their own name. These are just guidelines, so do check with the car hire company to clarify the cost and documentation needed.
Speed limits are in kilometres per hour, and are as follows:
- Rural Areas: 100kph/75mph
- Arterial Route 60-80kph/35-50
- Urban Areas: 50kph/35mph
- Residential Areas: 20-40kph/12-25mph
New Zealanders drive on the left-hand side of the road.
Hilly, narrow or winding roads may result in your trip taking longer than expected. You're not allowed to turn left at an intersection when the traffic lights are red.
If you hold a valid and current overseas driver licence or international driving permit, you can drive for a maximum of 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand. It is recommended, therefore, that you apply for a New Zealand license.
