A business blunder, in some countries, could mean the difference between a deal and disrepute. Again, its all about culture if not adopting, at least recognising and respecting the traditions and protocols of a people.

If you are expanding a business to Japan, the concept of face is important. In Japanese culture, it is considered embarrassing if you turn down an individuals request. Instead you are supposed to say that the request is inconvenient or under consideration, rather than cause someone to loose face, which is considered humiliating. If you are setting up a business in Japan, it is helpful to understand the concept of harmony. Japanese society is built on a foundation of harmony, and from an early age Japanese people are encouraged to avoid confrontation. Japanese business greetings are also very formal and ritualized, although the Japanese are known to be forgiving of people who make cultural mistakes.
