You will need a driving licence, passport or accepted form of ID and a credit card. You can rent a car for around 200 SAR . These are just guidelines, so do check with the car hire company to clarify the cost and documentation needed.

Speed limits are in kilometres per hour, and are as follows:

Motorway: 80-120kph/50-75mph

Urban Areas: 45kph/30mph

You will have to acquire a translation of your UK driving license for the DLO (Driving License Office) to inspect. You can drive in Saudi on an International Driving License a UK license for up to three months. Following this, you need a Saudi license. Luckily, being a Brit (or American), you will not have to sit a driving test.

Women are not allowed to drive vehicles or ride bicycles on public roads. Non-Muslims may not enter Mecca or the immediate area, and police are in place to ensure that they turn off onto a ring road known amongst expatriates as the 'Christian Bypass'.
