There are several key points to remember when meeting a person in Cyprus. Shake hands, maintain eye contact and smile. Some Turkish Cypriots will lower their eyes during a meeting as a sign of respect and very religious Muslims will not shake hands with woman. Do not use someones first name until invited to do so. Remember to say goodbye to everyone individually.
When conducting business in Cyprus, it is important to Cypriots that meeting are in person rather than over the phone or in letter but initial meeting should be arranged by appointment and in advance. Initial request of a meeting can be made in writing, then confirmed over the phone.
When doing business in Cyprus arrive on time for a meeting but expect to be kept waiting from time to time. Meeting can sometimes veer off the subject of business so be patient. Decisions are not made at the meeting and expect negotiations as Cypriots are skilled bargainers.
