US shoe recycling company steps into the Middle East

Back to Case Studies

A M Shoes and Textile Inc. is a US-based company that was established in Livonia, Michigan, near Detroit, in 1996. The company recycles used items such as clothes, shoes, textiles and accessories. It supplies stores and wholesalers with large amounts of the used goods for distribution to consumers.

The company currently imports between 200,000 and 250,000 kilograms of used shoes and accessories, then recycles and distributes them worldwide at affordable prices. In addition to its operations in the US, the company has branches in Iquique in Chile and RAK in the UAE.

A M Shoes and Textile FZC, the company’s UAE branch, registered with RAK FTZ in November 2014. It started operations with 10 employees, and is in the process of hiring 40 more. Future plans call for expanding to recycle other goods, including toys and household items. “The strategic location of RAK FTZ is one of the main reasons we chose to set up here,” said Michael Sharara, founder of A M Shoes and Textiles FZC. “The availability of logistics and ease to ship goods to Africa and the Middle East region is another incentive that we had by registering in RAK FTZ. Also, the cost-effectiveness of setting up and operating business in RAK FTZ compared to other free zones in the country attracted us to operate here.”
