Car Rental in Japan

You will need an International Driving Licence to rent a car, or a Japanese license if you are already obtained permanent residency (or have resided for more than 12 months in the country). You can rent a car for around 6000- 10,000 JPY a day. These are just guidelines, so do check with the car hire company to clarify the cost and documentation needed.
Speed limits are in kilometres per hour, and are as follows:

  • Expressways: 80-100kph/50-60mph
  • Urban Areas: 40kph/30mph
  • Side Streets: 30kph/18mph
  • Elsewhere: 50-60kph/35-40mph

The Japanese drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Persons found driving in Japan without a legal license are subject to fines, arrest and possible deportation. "Residents" are expected to transpose to or obtain a Japanese drivers license. Those using an International Driving License who are resident in Japan can be subject to fines or arrest.
