Banking in Japan

In order to set up a bank account with a Japanese bank, you are required to present an Alien Registration Card and one other form of ID (for example, a National Health Insurance card). Forms of ID from a home country are not valid in Japan and a passport is also not valid as it does not show your address of residence in Japan.

It is best to set up an account before entering into work as employers will need your account details.

ATM's and CDs are available at most Japanese banks; however, most ATM's do not accept foreign cards. International ATM's can be found in Post Offices.
