the proper and in my opinion the most effective way is a combination of online research and field research. Re cost, that depends on how thorough you want the market research to be. According to my more than 20 years experience with building up businesses i a good thorough market research will take about 3 months. Then you will have a clear strategy with goals and targets (expressed in time and money for the next 3 years) and have a complete overview of the market. My expertise is b2b.
