Dear Rolando What is the best way to start doing business in Brazil? How well do you need to know the people before starting to work with them? Thanks Question from Sam Hastings on 09/03/2010
Rolando says:
The best way to start business in Brazil is to visit the country. For Brazilians, personal contact is of utmost importance. They need to meet you, observe you and get a feel for the kind of person you are. Nearly all business in Brazil is done through personal contact; business matters are important but social interaction is very important too. Establishing mutual trust and goodwill is the first step. Arriving with a gift will always be an ice breaker. Business is done in meetings rooms, followed by drinks and lunch/dinner. Bringing your partner to join you at social events is normal.
Free flow of information is the norm and also encouraged. Brazilians are very direct; don’t expect them to take things “laying down”. If they don’t agree with what you are saying/proposing/offering, they will let you know but will try to reach a consensus or compromise as they are solution-oriented. Brazilians are fiercely proud of their country, their achievements and Brazil’s position as a regional superpower and a developing global player.
You will always be reminded that “God is Brazilian” and that Brazil has the most beautiful beaches, women, music, football players, etc. Nothing is impossible in Brazil, everything has a solution, “a way around things”.
Brazilians are very confident people, sophisticated and socially aware. Speaking about your outside interests is normal and also encouraged. Football is a very important part of any social gathering.
Personal appearance is crucial. You will find Brazilians well groomed, perhaps due to the climate. "The body” is a subjec of worship. Any self-respecting man or woman must have a good posture, look relaxed, yet elegant.
Keep social conversation “light”. Speaking about poverty or social inequality is a definite no-no.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Rolando
