Relocating to South Africa

There are many companies that offer removal services from the UK to South Africa. The price of the move will depend on the speed you want your items relocated a week, or a few days if you're in a rush. Most are experienced and will already be aware of the importance of scheduling. Before relocating to South Africa, you should contact professional movers at least two months in advance. A detailed relocation should also be drawn up.
Importantly, remember to change your address and telephone numbers with the people, companies, distributors, and agencies that matter.

Help From The Experts

Deciding on a reliable removal company is important. In order to relocate to South Africa, it is advisable to use a company who is part of one of the following professional relocation associations:

British Association of Removers (BAR) The Overseas Group

The Overseas Group is a collective of companies under the BAR banner who deal specifically with overseas relocation. BAR sets professional standards for the industry and, more specifically, it's overseas removal service providers. It not only offers information and advice to both removers and customers, but also acts as a complaints and disputes resolution service. As well as UK members, BAR Overseas also incorporates many overseas removers.
Many of its removal company members deal with all facets of overseas relocation, from shipping and storage to finding schools and housing.

European Relocation Association (EuRA)

With four major bases across Europe, EuRA is an industry organisation which oversees and the standards and policies of removal companies. Relocation service providers are required to abide by EuRA's rules of conduct, ensuring customers receive both reliable and fair service, and experience only the highest levels of professionalism. They can help provide a wide range of service providers for a any of your relocation needs. Visit EuRA.

The Association of Relocation Professionals (ARP)

Another professional body for relocation providers in the UK and abroad. Their members generally provide services to businesses looking to move employees to and from the UK.
The ARP includes house buying agents, removal firms, school advisers, specialist providers of furniture and professional staff. Agents can find and negotiate the price of homes and can help you choose the best removal company. They will also help with the red tape of moving to a new country, including locating schools, buying furniture or even a new car. Visit ARP.

FIDI

FIDI is an association which encompasses a global alliance of over 500 international removal companies, all of which comply to the FIDI Accredited International Mover standard (FAIM) a recognised seal of approval for company, customers and industry.
FIDI's ultimate goal is to position its members as the movers of choice for global relocation. They can help with all aspects of overseas removal and storage.

Packing

If you are moving to South Africa, it is recommended that you have the removal company pack your stuff for you. Obviously, you could pack yourself, but you could also save yourself time and hassle. The expertise of a removal company when packing items for shipping is invaluable, and if you decide to pack yourself, you will have to be wise on labelling boxes as PBO (Packed By Owner). This will make customs more likely to examine your belongings, sometimes causing you a delay and extra costs, which is the last hindrance you need. If you do pack, make sure you start as soon as you know you are moving. For overseas moves, it is best to begin packing and getting yourself organised a few months before you move; even earlier if possible.

Quotes

Before relocating to South Africa, it is recommended that you ask at least three removal companies for a quote. You do need to find a reputable company, so always ask for references. Choose your removal company with caution; do not settle solely on a good price. Decide on a removal company that complements your circumstance and requirements and, again, ask for references.

Removal Services

When moving to South Africa, some removal companies will be able to sort the entire move for you, from being a first point of call, to picking up the key to your new home. It is recommended that you ask for anything you are unsure of doing yourself many companies will be happy to help.
And remember, for some people, a few months is long enough to settle in their new home overseas. For others, it could be a few years. When moving to South Africa, do not expect the transition period to be stress-free and lucid. The chances are it will take some time to acclimatise and fall in love with your new country, job and culture. Set yourself goals and targets and try to achieve something from your long 'to-do' list every day. This can be anything from opening a bank account to trying out the local supermarket. You will slowly begin to feel familiar, empowered, pleased for challenging yourself, and ultimately succeeding.

Pet Relocation

Taking your pet(s) overseas isnt always as simple as booking an airline ticket. There are many country-specific regulations in place which must be considered at the earliest stage possible. Some countries may stipulate a quarantine period, whereas others may deny your pet entry all together.
What follows is an overview of the procedures involved in granting your pet access when relocating to South Africa. There are many specialist service providers that can help you along the way.
Pets that travel on flights to South Africa are classified as 'manifested cargo', not as 'excess baggage'. Any pet which travels on a flight must be older than 8 weeks. In order to avoid disappointment it is advised that you book well in advance of travelling, and contact the airline to find out their specific requirements regarding the transportation of pets. Quarantine is for a period of 60 days.
