Car Rental

The renter must provide a driving licence, credit card, and a passport. You can rent a car for around $30 a day. The passport, international driving license and a credit card must be in your own name. These are just guidelines, so do check with the car hire company to clarify the cost and documentation needed.

Speed limits are in kilometres per hour, and are as follows:

  • Motorways: 100-110kph/60-68mph
  • Urban Stretches: 100kph/60mph
  • Dual Carriageways: 100kph/60mph
  • Outside built-up areas: 100kph/60mph
  • Built-up areas: 50-60kph/30-35mph

Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road.

All the major roads in Australia are in good condition and there is a wealth of service stations. If you plan to drive between Australia's cities, check your distances and plan your stops - overnight if necessary.
